Default 60's reunion has come and gone

Aug. 20th 60's reunion was a great success. Attended by over 300, perfect weather and a great meal and dance at Club Lentinas. Met many old friends and classmates. Ken Soligny sang many songs of the 60's at the Kinsmen park in the afternoon. What a great time.

Default Chatham Daily News Article Aug 23- Reunion 60

Contratulations to all involved in organizing Reunion 60 and those who attended and made it a great success. Everything I have heard has been overwhelmingly positive.

When Tom Brooke and his group set up www.merlinontario.ca in Jan 2009 who of us would have thought it would provide the catalyst for 3 large gaherings and the reconnecting of 100's of people again.

I wonder what other village in Ontario could boast 3 such successful gatherings in a period of 2 years. This certainly says something about the village, the community and MDHS.

I have to apologize but for some reason the photo in the article below does not come through.

More than 225 people attend
Today's event was earmarked for anyone who attended or taught at the high school in the 1960s.” Mort Giles, a former teacher at the high school
MERLIN – A dinner dance, wagon tours and activities in the park highlighted a 1960s reunion Saturday for former students and staff of Merlin District High School.
BOB BOUGHNER bboughner@chathamdailynews.ca Organizers of Saturday's Merlin District High School reunion were pleased with the large turnout for the event held at the community hall. Shown are Mort Giles, left, Diane Grey-Morrison and Danny Jackson.
More than 225 people from across Canada and the U.S. turned out for the day-long event, which was months in the planning stage.
Mort Giles, a former teacher at the high school, which operated from 1949 to 1980, said it's likely the former high school's final reunion.
“Today's event was earmarked for anyone who attended or taught at the high school in the 1960s,'' he said. “We held a reunion 10 years ago for those who attended in the 1970s and last year's reunion was for students and staff from the 1940s and 50s.''
Giles was assisted in the organizing of this latest reunion by Diane Grey-Morrison and Danny Jackson.
Giles taught at the high school from 1965 to 1980 and among his first students was Chatham-Kent Essex MPP Pat Hoy.
“The provincial election is just around the corner but Pat isn't here today campaigning,'' he said. “In fact, his campaigning days are over – he has announced he won't run in the upcoming election.''
Former teacher Sue Marshall served as tour guide for wagon rides around the community throughout the afternoon.
Giles said the population of Merlin swelled to more than 200 at one point but when the high school closed in 1980 there were less than 70 students enrolled.
“I think when they did away with Grade 13 it marked the beginning of the end for MDHS,'' he said.
