Default Merlin Homecoming Event - Dedication of Merlin Conservation Area

May 27, 2011: Joy King, Chair of the Organizing Committee for Merlin Homecoming 2011 to be held in Merlin on June 4, 2011 and the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (“LTVCA”), are pleased to announce the dedication of the Merlin Conservation Area at 1:30 PM on June 4 on the grounds of the former Merlin District High School.

The 7 acres comprising the grounds of the former Merlin District High School (1950-1980) have been gifted to the LTVCA and will be designated the Merlin Conservation Area and will be replanted in trees native to the area. If will form part of the LTVCA’s reforestation programme for selected areas under its jurisdiction.

The dedication and ceremonial planting of a tree is set for 1:30 PM on June 4, 2011 at the entrance area to the former high school as one of the events scheduled for Merlin Homecoming 2011.

Joy King remarked that the dedication of the former high school grounds is a lasting memorial for Homecoming 2011 and a fitting use for the high school grounds. It is also consistent with the many “green” initiatives currently underway to preserve our natural environment. The former school property will be preserved in perpetuity for the enjoyment of the community and future generations.

Jerry Campbell stated that LTVCA were pleased to be part of Homecoming 2011 and to add this new conservation area to its 23 existing conservation areas. He noted it was especially fitting to add the Merlin Conservation Area on this, the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the LTVCA. For 50 years the LTVCA has been enhancing and protecting the environment in our community for present and future generations as well as providing a wide array of related services to the communities it serves.

Merlin Homecoming 2011 will commence at 10:00 AM on June 4 with registration at Kinsmen Park followed by activities in the park, throughout the village and at the Royal Canadian Legion, Merlin Branch 465. Residents and former residents of Merlin and area are all invited to attend.
